Holiday Farm Fire Update 10/6 (Holiday Farm Fire Wildfire)

October 6, 2020 - 10:08am
Springfield, Ore. Firefighters continue to make steady progress on containing the Holiday Farm Fire.  Approximately 450 firefighters remain on the ground each day to patrol, mop up, and conduct suppression repair work.  The fire remains at 173,094-acres and is 78% contained.  Firefighters have employed various pieces of technology to assist with the suppression effort.  Each night, crews with handheld Infrared cameras grid along the perimeter, along Highway 126, and around structures to identify pockets of heat.  Once they identify hot spots, engine crews move in to extinguish the heat.  These crews have been working for the last several nights to help further secure the fire line. Fire managers have been monitoring an area on the northeast corner of the fire where it has been too dangerous to put firefighters into.  This area is steep and has a lot of snags presenting overhead hazards.  The fire has been creeping and smoldering in this area and is posing low risk to the fire...

Lionshead Fire update for Tuesday, Oct. 6   REDMOND, Ore. –Interior burning to the northeast will continue to generate smoke for the next few days, but that burning is far less intense than the extreme fire behavior seen in early September.   “It’s staying on the ground, with the occasional tree torching, more or less like the activity you would see in prescribed burning activity,” Fire Behavior Analyst Dean Warner said, “But it will produce smoke, enough to drift off and obscure the sun in the late evening hours.”   Crews have completed rehabilitation work in the Stahlman Cabins and Sportsman Club area, and also winterization and repairs to the Olallie Lake recreational cabins. Work at the Sisi Butte Lookout is nearly finished.   Work clearing hazard trees from the Hwy. 46 right of way has progressed from Detroit almost to Breitenbush, and chipping the cleared material has begun. Early 1900s Wooden Culvert identified by BAER team The USFS BAER team identifies numerous values at risk in the aftermath of a wildfire and determines the threat of additional damage that could be caused by upcoming storms. This wood culvert, identified by a BAER team specialist, is located on a section of the Umpqua River Highway that connects Roseburg to Diamond Lake. The Umpqua River Highway was constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps between 1935 and 1939 under the supervision of the Bureau of Public Roads. Road construction in the Umpqua Forest dates to circa 1915. Forest Service maps from 1918 indicate the existence of a developed road connecting Crater Lake to what is now Highway 97. Only a trail extended north to Diamond Lake from Crater Lake at this time. By 1925, a Forest Service Supply Route existed between Crater Lake and Diamond Lake. Forest Service maps from 1925 also indicate a market road extending east out of Roseburg but ending well short of the western...
