Lionshead Fire update for Saturday, Oct. 10   REDMOND, Ore. – Rain or shine, firefighters will be hard at work again today, performing suppression repair, hazard removal, chipping, patrol, and many other chores.   “We’re engaged in suppression repair across almost all divisions now,” Operations Chief Trainee John Spencer said. “We’ve achieved our objectives in some areas, but some areas have still got quite a few days to go.”   It takes and enormous amount of time to fall, gather and chip thousands of hazard trees and slash, then spread that material across the forest floor, in addition to line and road repair.   Although Hwy. 46 is not open to the public and roadblocks remain in place, Breitenbush Retreat staff will be allowed to enter the area in groups today, during limited time frames, to retrieve belongings.   Conditions Friday were somewhat warmer and drier than expected, with more active interior burning in the afternoon. Lionshead Fire update for Friday, Oct. 9 (Lionshead Fire Wildfire)

October 9, 2020 - 10:54am
Lionshead Fire update for Friday, Oct. 9   REDMOND, Ore. – Much of the repair and rehabilitation work firefighters and resource advisors (READs) being done this week has focused on stabilizing and protecting areas of the burn zone against the incoming rains.   Mitigation measures on steep slopes have been prioritized to reduce erosion, particularly in the form of dozer line repair. This work includes loosening soils compacted by heavy equipment to increase absorption; redistributing berms of soil and vegetative material scraped away when bulldozers were cutting line; and creating water bars, which channel water into ditches or unburned green areas.   Thursday, Prineville Hotshots helped guide strategic water drops on a spot fire near the finger to the north. Water drops continued on Mt. Bruno as well.   A contingency line to the north that will benefit both the Lionshead and Riverside fire responses is nearly complete. Hazard tree falling on the Hwy. 46 corridor is nearly...

The Malheur National Forest Prepares to Implement Fall Prescribed Burning (Fall Prescribed Fire Projects 2020 Prescribed Fire)

October 9, 2020 - 9:34am
Utilizing prescribed fire can protect communities and other values, improve habitat, and restore ecological balance to landscapes by reducing vegetation buildup on the landscape.   JOHN DAY, PRAIRIE CITY, and HINES, OR. – Due to favorable weather conditions, the Malheur National Forest may begin Fall Prescribed Burning beginning Wednesday, October 14th, 2020. Frequent, low-intensity fire is essential for healthy forests and reducing the risk of uncharacteristic wildfire caused by excessive fuel buildup. Prescribed burning is an effective tool for removing excessive amounts of brush, shrubs, and trees, while also encouraging the growth of native vegetation. It is only conducted when factors such as resource availability, air quality, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and fuel moisture levels are ideal. All burns are done under carefully planned prescriptions and protocols to eliminate the risk of an escaped fire and smoke exposure to communities. The Forest Service...

Understanding Soil Burn Severity (Western Oregon USFS BAER Burned Area Emergency Response)

October 8, 2020 - 9:17pm
Understanding Soil Burn Severity We tend to think of wildfire burn severity in terms of the visual impacts to above-ground vegetation, but the post-fire landscape response (erosion, flooding, and mass movement) is generally more strongly correlated to soil burn severity. When characterizing soil burn severity, looking at the vegetation is a good starting place to understand the conditions on the ground. Armed with that information, the BAER team’s watershed specialists (soil scientists, hydrologists, and geologists) ground-truth different vegetation burn intensities to tease out patterns of how fire affected and changed the properties of the soil.  Pre-fire ground cover, forest type, fire behavior, slope, aspect, and other factors all influence soil burn severity.  After field observations are collected, specialists adjust the vegetation severity map to create the soil burn severity (SBS) map.  The SBS is broken into four different classes: unburned (green), low severity (blue),...

Lionshead Update: Stahlman residents may now access property Oct. 8, 2020 (Lionshead Fire Wildfire)

October 8, 2020 - 11:18am
Stahlman residents may now access property   REDMOND, Ore. – Stahlman Cabins and Sportsmen Club residents and property owners are now free to re-enter the community, as the Linn County Sheriff’s Office has downgraded the evacuation level to 2 – Be Ready.   Evacuees returning to their communities should remain alert, as many hazards remain. Soils may be unstable; ash can camouflage trip holes and trip hazards; hot embers may still be smoldering in stumps, roots and holes; and trees and branches weakened by fire can fall at any time.     Property owners are advised to stay within the footprint of their cabin property and on roadways, as hazard removal has not been performed outside of those areas.   Increased winds and rain in the coming days could bring additional hazards, including destabilizing previously stable ground, toppling more trees, mudslides and flash flooding.   For complete details, please visit https://www.linnsheriff.org/
