Prescribed Burn Notice: Walla Walla Ranger District (2022 Umatilla NF Prescribed Fire Prescribed Fire)
The Tiger Creek prescribed burn is anticipated to take 2-5 days to complete and primarily consists of grass and timber. The objective of the burn is to improve foraging habitat for big game, reduce long-term wildfire risk through reductions in existing fuel loading, to restore the ecological functions of a fire adapted ecosystem to the area, and to kill germinated invasive annual grasses. Hunters and forest visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and avoid the area during prescribed burning activities. Additional information about this prescribed burn is available by visiting the Umatilla National Forest’s prescribed fire interactive map. This map displays burning activities and the interactive map allows the user to zoom in on certain areas and click on a burn unit for more information (such as acreage, status, etc). US 2: Hwy 2 is open but may be subject to intermittent delays if debris falls onto the road. Washington State Department of Transportation crews continue to partner with the incident command team managing the fire. Kalama Fire Update – October 17, 2022 (Kalama Fire Wildfire)
Overview: The Kalama Fire, located southeast of Kalama Horse Camp on the south side of Mount St. Helens, continues to show little growth and is currently approximately 493 acres in size and containment has been increased to 37%. Fire Managers continue their objective of keeping the fire north of Dry Creek, south and east of Forest Service Road 81. Fire Behavior: Fire fighters have taken advantage of the minimal fire activity and have increased their focus on suppression repair activities which include removing hose from firelines, repairing dozer lines by covering them with downed vegetation and constructing water diversion “water bars” to direct water off disturbed soil to minimize erosion damage, and repairing road damage. This is precautionary due to Goat Rocks Fire behavior. Packwood proper is not under evacuation status at this time. The Murphy Lake Fire is burning about 2 ½ miles southeast of Scenic WA in Wilderness administered by the Mt. Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest near Murphy Lakes and is visible from Hwy 2. It began from a lightning strike on August 18 and has grown to an estimated 170 acres. The fire remained active throughout the day yesterday resulting in moderate additional growth. The ridge top location of the fire is producing primarily backing fire spread on steep slopes, accelerated by rolling materials. Low relative humidity and easterly winds will likely result in increased fire activity and additional growth. Weather: A Red Flag Warning is in effect for the fire area for low relative humidity and easterly winds. The Warning is in effect through 5 p.m. Sunday.
