Location: Two miles east of White Pass Ski Area, within the Goat Rocks Wilderness on the Naches Ranger District, 13 miles east of Packwood, WA. Cause: Lightning Values at Risk: White Pass area and ski resort; homes and organizational camps at Clear and Rimrock Lakes; wilderness; late successional reserve; northern spotted owl and other wildlife habitat; bull trout habitat; and state highway 12. Homeowners will continue to see smoke and occasional interior flair ups within contained lines. Yesterday’s Activities: The Miles Fire is now 35,455 acres and 39 percent contained. Firefighters continued mop up and removal of hose lays on the southern half of the Miles Fire and the northern edge of the Columbus Fire. Community Meeting Gold Beach – Tuesday, August 21, 6 p.m. at the Curry County Fairgrounds in the Curry Showcase Building, 29392 Ellensburg Avenue, Gold Beach, OR. Weather Another day of elevated fire weather is predicted today. Temperatures will rise to around 90 degrees in the valleys and slightly cooler on the ridges. Relative humidities will be in the high teens or low 20 percent range. It will be slightly cooler on Wednesday with temperatures in the low 80s and relative humidities in the mid 20s. Taylor Creek and Klondike East The Alaska Interagency Incident Management Team is managing the Taylor Creek Fire and Klondike Fire East. The hard, around-the-clock work by firefighters continues to pay dividends in the form of increased containment. Smoke Report for August 21 and 22 (Miles Fire Wildfire)
Smoke Outlook for 8/21 - 8/22California-Oregon Border South Umpqua ComplexSpecial Statement This air quality forecast predicts potential particulate matter levels, not ozone. Forecast is based on 24 hour average. Fire Miles Fire increased by 2,251 acres burning the northern flank. Columbus Fire increased by 677 acres burning the southern flank bringing a total of 49,943 acres for South Umpqua Complex. Increased fire activities produced more smoke than forecasted yesterday. The planned firing operation for today is expected to produce more smoke until the wind pushes the smoke out of the area. Smoke With today's wind shift from northwest to northeast, smoke impact is expected to increase with greater impact to the communities south of the South Umpqua Complex fire. Inversion will hold down the smoke until a break around noon but smoke will remain visible area wide south of the fire. With a possible development of afternoon thunderstorm, gusty wind may push the smoke out of the area....
Incident Update 8-21-18 (Kelly Mountain Fire Wildfire)
Republic, WA – Fire crews will grid through the remaining areas as mop up operations continue. Hose lays will be disassembled where mop up is complete. Tenders will be driving up and down N. Fork Trout Creek Road and Rose Valley Road to supply water for the remaining mop up operations. Yield to tenders on the road, use caution while driving in the area and respect the closed road sign at the Empire Sno-Park. The Kelly Mountain Fire started at approximately 11:00am on August 11th and was a part of eleven lightning and storm related fires reported in the Republic/Curlew/Toroda area. Local resources from US Forest Service, Washington State Department of Natural Resources along with private contractors responded to the Kelly Mountain fire that grew rapidly due to strong winds and extremely dry conditions. Barring any significant change, today will mark the last shift for resources assigned to the Kettle River Fire. We expect to place the fire in patrol status and turn the incident over to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources tomorrow.The Army and Air National Guard hand crews that have been so critical to our success here are being reassigned to the Crescent Mountain Fire which is actively burning near Winthrop. Guard troops are excited for the opportunity to assist on another fire and show them what they learned here on the Kettle River Fire. We send them onto their new assignment just a little bit worn, but wiser for the wear. Terwilliger Fire evening update Blue River, OR, Aug. 20, 2018 The Forest Service and Oregon Department of Forestry continue to use air and ground crews to actively suppress the fire burning near Terwilliger (Cougar) Hot Springs, which is still estimated at 110 acres. Updated acreage will be available following an infrared flight planned for this evening. The fire started near the trail to Terwilliger Hot Springs with winds pushing the fire away from the springs. The cause of the fire is under investigation. With critically dry fuels, more fire activity and growth are expected. A section of the Aufderheide Scenic Highway (Forest Service Road 19), Terwilliger Hot Springs, and other nearby recreation areas are currently inaccessible due to the fire. Oregon State Highway 126 remains open. No residential areas or structures are currently threatened and there are no evacuation notices at this time. Fire - Red Flag warning today and tonight due to low relative humidity and gusty east-northeast winds. Winds will increase today after inversion lift. This should aid in clearing heavy, pooled smoke in the lower valleys and provide good visibility for air operations. The combination of gusty winds and dry conditions will also lead to more active fire behavior today. Smoke - Increasing winds today from a recent cold front passage. Winds will clear out much of the smoke in the forecast area but there will still be lingering smoke throughout the day. More active fire behavior on local fires could produce more smoke in communities closest to the fires. Smoke will settle back into the valleys in the evening but not as thick as yesterday. Northwest Incident Management Team 6 Shawn Sheldon, Incident Commander Shane Theall, Deputy IC Watson Creek Fire Update Monday, August 20, 2018 As firefighters work in challenging terrain on the Watson Creek Fire, favorable wind conditions assisted firefighting efforts on Sunday night. Last night’s infrared flight over the fire shows it has grown to 25,788 acres. On the northwest side of the fire near Forest Road 29, commonly known as Government Harvey Road, crews have been holding and improving the line while also addressing hazardous snags in the area. Near Slide Lake and Withers Lake, the fire is holding. Fire spread is in the direction of McComb Butte near Forest Road 33. Crews will be scouting to strategize modes of attack. On the southwestern edge of the fire, dozer lines are still holding. The temperature today in the fire area will be in the 70s with relative humidity at 20-30%. The fire has not moved to the northeast or south but will continue to spread west. Crews will focus on holding and improving roads, rivers and creeks where the fire is currently held in check.
