Overview Klondike Fire West Zone Hot, dry weather continued over the fire Thursday but, favorable winds allowed tactical firing operations to occur on the west and north parts of the fire. On the west side, firing operations were successful between Game Lake Peak and Saddle Mountain, tying the fire line in with areas burned by the Chetco Bar and Collier Butte Fires and removing fuel from the path of the advancing fire. In the north, fire moved toward Sugarloaf Mountain. Again, successful firing operations west of Fish Hook Peak backed down the ridge to prevent growth to the northwest. On Friday, the weather will be sunny and warm with light winds. Areas of dense smoke across the fire area may prevent aircraft from flying. A new closure area for the Klamath National Forest has been issued that combines the area described on the Closure Order issued on August 16, 2018 with the area identified in the advisory issued on September 1, 2018. A full description and map of the Closure Order No. 18-05-012 is attached below.

Fire The Klondike Fire remains active, mainly along the northern portion of the fire south of Agness. Klondike: 117,458 acres and 51% contained Taylor Creek: 52,839 acres and 95% contained Smoke Dense smoke is expected to linger in valleys within the Rogue River-Siskiyou NF and surrounding areas and will again be slow to lift, likely not until noon or later. This afternoon winds will gain shift to westerly mid to late afternoon, followed by a frontal passage in the evening. Cougar Creek, Lost, and Bannock Lakes Fires Smoke expected to decrease and cold front with potential for rain on the way Friday, September 7, 2018 Cougar Creek Fire: The fire began by smoldering and creeping in the northwest corner of the fire on Thursday morning. In the afternoon, the fire made a run up a ridge south of Jimmy Creek, producing a smoke column visible from Fish Lake to just north of Plain. At this time, there is no concern of major fire movement, but a helicopter will fly over the area this morning to verify conditions. Firefighters patrolled hand line near Signal Peak, and the line continues to hold. Mop up operations, infrared imaging to find hot spots, and patrolling are continuing along completed line on the western perimeter. The southern and eastern areas of the fire are secure, and firefighters are conducting mop up, backhaul, and repair work, such as road grading. This afternoon, the Cougar Creek fire flared up on the north edge, east of the Mad River. At the writing of this announcement, the fire was burning back towards itself east of the Mad River and south of Jimmy Creek in Section 9, northeast of Maverick

Fire crews continue to mop-up and perform suppression repair along the fire boundary and within the interior. The Level 1 – Be Ready – evacuation status for Lakeview Estates will be lifted at noon today. Fire managers ask that only residents and property owners use the roads, as there is significant traffic from fire crews, heavy equipment, ranchers and logging trucks. Near critical fire weather yesterday, which included gusty winds, caused some tree torching and burning of interior pockets of previously unburned fuels near the 3315 Road. Fire lines were tested on the Eastern flank, and thanks to a bucket drop from the Type 1 helicopter they all held. All road and area closures remain in effect through September 17. South Central Oregon Interagency Fire Incident Management Team 3 is carefully weighing if the some areas could be opened sooner, but must consider safety of the public first. 9/6 Natchez Fire Update Happy Camp, CA – Hot and dry conditions continue with light westerly winds in the afternoon and occasional gusts up to 20 mph. Critically dry live and dead fuels and unstable atmospheric conditions may contribute to the formation of increased fire growth where abundant fuel exists. Yesterday’s unstable atmosphere caused smoke columns that were visible from Happy Camp and the surrounding area. The fire burned actively on the southwestern flank toward burn scars from the 2017 Eclipse Fire. Air resources were used to cool hot spots along the western perimeter near Polar Bear Mountain. Suppression-repair work continued along the eastern and northern containment lines. Firefighters continued to monitor for and extinguish hot spots within firelines. Today, fire managers will continue to use air resources to keep the fire from crossing the mountain passes to the west. OverviewKlondike Fire West ZoneHot, dry weather continued Wednesday, and active winds from the south and west pushed smoke north toward Agness. The west side of the fire was active east of Game Lake but helicopters worked the area in the morning before heavy smoke moved in. The northeast side experienced minimal growth including movement toward Fish Hook Peak. Favorable weather conditions allowed for a successful tactical firing operation by Game Lake on the western side of the fire in the late afternoon. Other actions included continued improvement of fire line and preparation for firing operations on multiple areas of the fire.
