Klondike Fire West ZoneYesterday firefighters continued to patrol the fire area, mop up remaining sources of heat and monitor the areas around Slim Creek and Montana Spring. Resources made good progress repairing damage caused by fire suppression actions and removing woody debris. Today’s work will continue all of these activities. More sunshine and lower humidity levels are expected today, but fire activity is still anticipated to be minimal. One fourth to a half inch of rain is forecast for Friday, along with lower temperatures. On Saturday, light showers are expected during the morning hours. Fire suppression repair efforts will likely increase after Friday’s expected rainfall. Firefighting resources continue to be released when they are no longer needed and when appropriate based on weather. Alder Creek 2 Prescribed Burn (2018 Umatilla NF Prescribed Fire Prescribed Fire)

Fire management officials on the Walla Walla Ranger District are implementing a 150 acre prescribed burn within the Alder Creek burn unit, located approximately 22 miles North of Elgin, OR. The Alder Creek prescribed burn is anticipated to take 1 day to complete and primarily consists of grass, brush and scattered timber. The objective of the burn is to improve foraging habitat for big game, reduce long-term wildfire risk through reductions in existing fuel loading, and to restore the ecological functions of a fire adapted ecosystem to the area. Hunters and forest visitors are encouraged to plan ahead and avoid the area during prescribed burning activities. Klondike Fire West Zone Subdued fire activity was observed yesterday as a result of recent rainfall of nearly one-half inch in the fire area. Large fuels continue to smolder and fire may creep very slowly under dense tree canopy cover. This fire behavior is expected to continue today. Clear and cool weather conditions are expected today and tomorrow, with up to one-half inch of rain forecast for Friday. Today firefighters will continue monitoring the fire area and mopping up any heat sources. Many resources are working to repair damage caused by fire suppression actions. This work entails repairing the hand and dozer fire lines, roads, trails, staging areas, safety zones and drop points used during fire suppression efforts. Firefighters expect to remove approximately 80,000 feet of hose from the fire area. Firefighting resources are being released when they are no longer needed. Incendio Klondike. Zona Oeste del Incendio Los bomberos pudieron observar el dia de ayer muy poca actividad en el fuego debido a las condiciones humedas. A pesar de que el comportamiento del fuego esta siendo controlado, todavia el fuego podria extenderse en areas donde las copas de los arboles estan cubiertos por copas bien densas y cubriendo gran cantidad de material de combustion en el suelo. El dia de hoy, los bomberos continuaran monitoreando el fuego y limpiando areas donde persiste la presencia de calor, asi como tambien con la reparacion de areas que fueron averiadas durante los esfuerzos de supresion del fuego. Se tiene previsto que la presencia de lluvia por la manana del dia se vea disminuida al atardecer. Se pronostican condiciones secas hasta el dia Viernes. Klondike Fire West ZoneFirefighters observed minimal fire activity yesterday due to wet conditions. Although fire behavior is subdued, fire can still spread and smolder in areas under dense tree canopy cover and in large fuels. Today firefighters will continue to monitor the fire and mop up areas where heat persists and continue repairing areas damaged during fire suppression efforts. Today, showers in the morning are expected to decrease in the afternoon, giving way to clear skies in the evening. Dry conditions are forecast until Friday, when rain is expected to return. People driving the fire area are urged to be cautious, as there is increased traffic from fire vehicles and hunters, slippery road conditions from recent rains, and repaving operations under way on sections of Forest Road 23 (Bear Camp Road), which remains open to public traffic. Incendio: Klondite. Zona Oeste El dia de ayer se vio reducida la actividad del incendio debido a las recientes lluvias y el clima fresco. Al monitorear areas criticas de incendio, los bomberos pudieron observar el humo solamente proveniente del area del fuego en Breezy Creek cerca de Montana Spring. Se espera la continuacion de condiciones climaticas frescas y mojadas con predicciones de lluvia para esta tarde. Asi como tambien, se espera que la calidad del aire permanezca a niveles saludables. El dia de ayer, los bomberos localizaron un camino dentro de Indian Flat desde el cual se continuo con la limpieza a lo largo de Indigo Creek. Ademas, no se dio un incremento del fuego en el area de Horse Sign Creek. Basados en las condiciones climaticas, no se anticipa un movimiento del fuego. Klondike Fire West Zone Recent rain and cooler temperatures reduced fire activity yesterday. Firefighters monitored locations of concern in the fire area and observed smoke only in the area of Breezy Creek near Montana Spring. Cool, damp weather is expected to continue, with rain showers predicted for this afternoon. Air quality is expected to remain good. Yesterday firefighters located a trail into Indian Flat and continue to mop up along Indigo Creek. There was no fire growth yesterday in the Horse Sign Creek area. No fire movement is anticipated today based on weather conditions. Today, crews will improve the BLM road 35-9-1 north of Brown’s Gulch as a check line, continue mop up operations along Burnt Ridge Road (2308), and repair areas impacted by fire suppression activity on the west side of the fire. Smoke Outlook for 10/01 - 10/02. SW Oregon - Klondike and Taylor Creek Fires. Special Statement This is the final Smoke Outlook to be published for the Klondike Fire. Fire The Klondike Fire is 72% contained and 167,033 acres. Fire is most active at the confluence of Indigo Creek and Illinois River, Snail/Slim Creek drainages, Little Silver Creek, and Montana Springs. Smoke Today The cooler, wetter weather has moderated smoke generated from the fire. Air quality will continue to be good, with some afternoon peaks into the moderate range around the Agness area. Smoke Tomorrow Conditions are expected to remain cool and humid tomorrow, and into the week. Heavy smoke and poor air quality attributable to the Klondike fire is unlikely from this point forward. Areas should continue to experience good air quality.

Incendio Klondike. Zona Oeste El dia de ayer y durante la noche, el area del incendio recibio aproximadamente de uno a tres decimas de pulgada de lluvia. Las condiciones mojadas disminuiran poco a poco. Sin embargo, el dia de hoy permanecera fresco, con vientos Sur-Suroeste que podrian traer rafagas de viento mas alla de 10 mph. Los bomberos se daran a la tarea de verificar las areas exactas donde la precipitacion se dio y su efecto sobre la materia de combustion. El dia de hoy los bomberos continuan enfocandose en el acercameinto del fuego hacia el Norte de la carretera Bear Camp (23), al Oeste de Chrome Ridge y arriba de Horse Sign Creek. Asimismo, se continua el monitoreo de un decimo de acre de terreno donde se logro detectar y a la vez controlar un inicio de fuego al Norte de Indigo Creek, exactamente en la parte baja donde se une con el rio Illinois.
