Elevated temperatures and winds out of the northeast will once again push fire control efforts to the limit. The area remains under a “Red Flag Warning” that is expected to last through 8:00 p.m. Northeast winds are very similar to California’s Santa Annas that are known for fueling large fires. Coming out of the east, and unlike cooler winds off the Pacific Ocean, east winds coming over the Cascade Mountain Range are much warmer and dryer. These winds are expected to persist through today. The Florida Red Team took command of management of the fire this morning. They thanked the Northwest Incident Management Team 13 for the work they have done in protecting lives and property while managing these fires. The Norse Peak Fire (15,528 acres) continues growing today to the north, northwest, and to the south where it moved down towards Highway 410 along Gold Hill to the west and Fifes Peak to the east. Helicopter bucket drops of water were used to slow the progression of the fire. Firefighters used strategic firing along the Highway 410 corridor to remove the fuels between the road and the fire, which prompted the closure of Highway 410 last night for the safety of the public and the firefighters working along the road. As the Norse Peak Fire continues to grow to the north and east into the Crow Creek drainage, fire managers are determining containment lines. For the protection of the public they have closed Forest Road 1900 (aka: “Road 19” and “Little Naches”)....

Chetco Bar Fire Air Quality Update - September 1 Smoke: Smoke production is expected to be significant today. Moderate to light East/Northeast winds will continue to drift smoke from Chetco Bar and other regional fires toward coastal areas into Gold Beach, Brookings and South into NW California. In these areas, Unhealthy to Very Unhealthy levels are expected to be seen in association with reduced visibility along Highway 101 and other local roadways. A light sea breeze later today may give some reprieve to coastal communities this afternoon. In the Agness, Grants Pass and Cave Junction regions, predominantly Unhealthy conditions are expected to remain as smoke from several fires drift down into these communities. Milli FireSeptember 1, 2017 Daily Update Clear skies yesterday allowed a reconnaissance flight over the fire to assess current fire behavior. Crews patrolled the northern perimeter of the fire and continued to mop up. Fuels on a portion of the private land within the fire perimeter burned yesterday however, valuable regeneration areas on the private land are being protected. Crews strengthened containment lines to the east that cross through the private property. The southeast and south perimeters of the fire will continue to be in patrol and mop up status. The west side of the fire continues to burn down slope with occasional torching in pockets of timber in the Three Sisters Wilderness and established containment lines. On the northwest side, the fire is backing down to OR 242.Fuels continue to burn within the fire perimeter which will produce some smoke. Fire activity increased north of Highway 410 yesterday afternoon. Due to helicopters dropping water and crews working along the roadway, the highway remains closed. This change in fire activity has delayed the planned pilot car opening that was set for 7am this morning. Single tree and small group torching—when the fire burns several trees at once—created significant spot fires that crews located and controlled. The crews successfully contained a 25-acre spot outside the primary containment line—an important priority that restored the integrity of the control line. A rock slide has temporarily closed the 1830 road near the top of the fire. Fire managers will be bringing in heavy equipment to clear the road for fire traffic. The forecast is for critical fire weather and the potential for extreme fire behavior due to low relative humidity and high temperatures with unstable atmospheric conditions. Line construction has been initiated on the western fire perimeter, east of Cold Springs trailhead. Work in that area will increase fire traffic on Cold Springs Road, which remains closed beyond its junction with the Forest Service Road (FSR) 3659. Progression has made in holding the perimeter around the North Pelican fire. The most up to date mapping shows the current fire size as 1,825 acres and containment holding at 18%. A fire weather watch remains in effect due to hot and dry conditions which are expected through the weekend. Predictions are calling for one of the hottest air masses to affect the area so far, this summer.
