Chetco East Zone Fire Update. Monday, September 18, 2017. 9:00 a.m. With just a few patches of fuel noticeably burning due to cooler, wetter weather, yesterday’s fire activity in the Indigo Fire (784 Fire) was minimal. It is 578 acres and has not crossed the West Fork of Indigo Creek into Josephine County. Fire crews have nearly finished indirect containment lines to the east of the fire by widening and removing brush along forest roads 055 and 510. Crews have also progressed with similar work to the west of the fire on the 2308 and 076 roads between Bear Camp and the Fish Hook Peak area. The Chetco Bar Fire is currently 53% contained at 189,787 acres. Fire activity in the East Zone was relatively quiet due to the weather. However, there were some small areas of active fire north of Pearsol Peak and near the Illinois River south of Deadman Bar east of the horseshoe bend in the river. All the hose along both containment lines have been fully retrieved.The most active fire behavior continues to be contained in the Lone Fir Creek drainage on the eastside of the fire area within the Sawtooth Wilderness area. The Umpqua North Complex of 10 fires is only one of over 80 major fires or complexes burning across the Northwest US. Firefighting resources are at a premium and stretched thin. On several fires including the UNC military resources have been brought in to assist the firefighting efforts. The fire continues to be active in the vicinity of the Middle Fork of the Applegate River and below Whiskey Ridge. This activity is the result of continued low fuel moistures and low humidity allowing the fire to burn. Firefighters are making good progress meeting objectives with safety as the top priority. Today, crews are expecting below normal temperatures and active fire behavior in some areas within the perimeter. This could result in continued smoke in the vicinity of the Abney Fire. Jones Fire Update September 17 2017 (Jones Fire Wildfire)
Size: 9,833 acres Containment: 55% Cause: Lightning Resources: 259 PersonnelYesterday firefighters patrolled and monitored the south, west, and north flanks of the fire. Firefighters also worked to contain a slop-over which moved into the Marine Creek drainage. Sprinklers were set-up at the junction of Forest Roads 1831, 1832, and 18. They also scouted contingency options and prepped on and near Forest Road 1825, 1839, and Forest Road 18. The objective is to hold the fire south of Forest Road 18. Operations today will consist of monitoring, patrolling and removing fire hose. Over 54,000 feet of 1.5 inch diameter hose has been removed by firefighters so far. Restoration efforts will begin on the fireline. Preparation work will continue on Forest Road 18 for holding operations including felling, brushing, and installing sprinklers.
