Silver Creek Fire Update - July 15, 2018 (Silver Creek Fire Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - July 15, 2018 - 11:00am
This is an update on the small fire burning in a remote southeast corner of Silver Falls State Park. Smoke was first reported late in the evening on Thursday, July 12, and after confirming the location, attack began early on Friday, July 13. Main points: It’s burning in the Howard Creek drainage, a remote, steep, timbered area over a mile from the park boundary. The fire is currently estimated at 27 acres (see attached rough map). A good portion of the change in acreage over the last day is due to improved mapping and information from firefighters on the ground rather than fire growth. Initial acreage estimates were hampered by the dense canopy, extensive understory, and limited visibility due to smoke. Containment is currently estimated at 25%. The area is especially challenging for firefighters due to steep slopes and the nature of a mature forest; thick undergrowth slows progress and snags pose a falling hazard. Firefighter and public safety remains priority for all involved....

Inciweb Articles OR - July 13, 2018 - 10:00pm
This is an update on a small fire burning in a remote southeast corner of Silver Falls State Park. Smoke was first reported late in the evening on Thursday, July 12. Crews from Drakes Crossing Fire District responded quickly, but the small size and thick undergrowth made it difficult to pinpoint the source before darkness made further work impossible. Crews from the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) joined Drakes Friday, July 13 to cut a trail toward the fire while aviation resources dropped water and retardant through the day.Additional Details:A YMCA summer camp at Camp Silver Creek, a facility inside the park about a mile from the fire, ended a day early as a precaution, with 142 youth and several dozen staff leaving between 4-5 p.m.While other areas of the park are currently scheduled to open on Saturday, July 14, there will be abundant firefighter equipment and aircraft in the area. How can timber harvests and recreation coexist?

WA DNR News - July 11, 2018 - 2:21pm

Department of Natural Resources foresters, recreation managers, and recreation interest groups recently worked together to design a timber sale that contained sections of off-road vehicle trails that are part of the Walker Valley Off-Road Vehicle Area near Mount Vernon, Wa.

The goals were to design a timber sale and logging plan that both protected the trails and did not impact logging operations or timber sale revenue. To ensure success, the logging contractor was included in the pre-harvest meeting to review harvesting operations and confirm the location of designated trail crossings for logging purposes prior to starting.

After the harvest, DNR staff and recreation users walked through the area together to talk about how it went. According to Bob Langley with the Skagit Motorcycle Club, the loggers did a very good job of taking care of the trail.

Thank you to all our folks – internal and external – for working together to find the solutions that allow us to meet multiple goals.

InciWeb Articles WA - July 11, 2018 - 7:41am
Little Camas Fire Update 7/11/2018 8:00 a.m. Fire Information: (541) 499-2862 littlecamas2018@gmail.com There was no significant fire behavior or fire growth yesterday as containment lines around the fire perimeter were tested by winds gusting around 28 mph. Due to diminishing fire behavior and the success of mop-up operations, there will be significant demobilization of resources from the Little Camas Fire today. Some resources had already been released yesterday to assist in suppression efforts on Ryegrass Coulee Fire (near Vantage, WA) and Beaver Creek Fire (near Leavenworth, WA). Operations today will continue to focus on reinforcing containment lines and mopping up the fire’s edge. Some residual heat within the northeast corner will receive additional water drops from helicopters, since the terrain is too steep for ground resources to safely access the area. The weather over the fire area is expected to become increasingly hot and dry, with temperatures around 85°...

Hoses were also deployed around a major portion of the fire perimeter, and crews began mopping up hot spots adjacent to fire lines. The dry cold front associated with gusty winds arrived as predicted last evening and tested the established control lines. Last night, a strike team of engines patrolled the fire and scouted for possible spot fires. However, fire remained within established lines. Today, firefighters’ tactics will focus on securing containment lines and mopping up hot spots near lines. Aerial support will assist forces on the ground as needed to reinforce lines. Fire managers also continue to monitor for rolling woody material and fire compromising control lines at the eastern portion of the fire on very steep and treacherous terrain. ...

Little Camas Fire Update7/9/2018 8:3Fire Information: (541) 499-2862 littlecamas2018@gmail.com Current strategies for the Little Camas Fire are focused on minimizing acres burned in order to protect commercial timber and sensitive plant habitat. In anticipation of expected critical weather conditions, operations will concentrate on reinforcing fire line construction and securing burning operations from yesterday. The team will also identify contingency options to address the potential for rolling debris on steep terrain within the fire area. Smoke has been minimal over the past couple of days and is anticipated to remain light today. As the fire’s edge is secured with hand-line and water, firefighters are patrolling for hot areas and rolling debris. Lobster Creek Fire 7/6/18 Update (Lobster Creek Fire Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - July 6, 2018 - 9:08am
Oregon Department of ForestryIncident Management Team 3 News Release July 6, 2018 Lobster Creek Fire Update GOLD BEACH, Ore. – With containment on the Lobster Creek Fire reaching 55 percent and the fire perimeter stable at 397 acres, fire managers are planning to transition control of the fire back to the Coos Forest Protective Association (CFPA). ODF IMT 3 plans to transfer command of the fire back to CFPA Sunday. Fire crews remain focused on mopping up the fire’s perimeter. Mop up is slow, dirty and hazardous work that involves methodically digging out residual heat which often lurks in stumps and roots. Modern technology aids the hunt for hot spots. Night-shift crews use hand-held infrared scanners to find and identify residual heat sources. Fallers have been identifying and knocking down fire-weakened trees that could pose a hazard to firefighters working below. Removing hazard trees near the perimeter also eliminates the potential of those falling trees...

Stormy Creek Fire 7/5/18 (Hispanic Version) (Stormy Creek Fire Wildfire)

InciWeb Articles WA - July 5, 2018 - 9:08am
