South Umpqua Complex Daily Update 7-29-18 (South Umpqua Complex Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - July 29, 2018 - 10:52am
Miles Fire and Columbus Fire burned actively on Saturday, but fire spread was slower than on Friday. Relative humidity stayed a little higher, and spot fires were less common and closer to the main fires. The Snowshoe Fire had some residual pockets of fuels burning on the northwest end, but fire personnel made good progress on mopping up the edges of the fire. Some resources are being shifted from Snowshoe Fire to Miles Fire, which is now the top priority for South Umpqua Complex. Miles Fire continues to push to the east toward Hawk Mountain and Buckhorn Mountain. Burnout was completed on about ½ mile of line on the Umpqua National Forest to the south of Miles Fire. Fire managers are coordinating fire fighting activities between Miles Fire and Sugar Pine Fire. Helicopters assigned to Sugar Pine Fire have been flying on the Miles Fire when the air is clearer to the west. Establishing control lines on private and Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands is a priority to prevent...

7/29/18 Klondike Fire Update (Klondike Fire Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - July 29, 2018 - 9:57am
Weather & Fire Behavior: Weather conditions will be more moderate than the previous two days, however the air will remain drier than normal. The dry, hot conditions are expected to result in active to very active fire behavior, with potential for fire behavior to increase as smoke clears. Yesterday’s Activities: Despite efforts to hold the fire south and west of the Illinois River, extreme fire behavior the previous day resulted in spotting across the dozer line that was constructed along Roads 675 and 4105. Due to the potential for continued extreme fire weather and risk to firefighter safety, firefighters were not able to suppress all of these spot fires resulting in fire becoming established in the Horse Mountain area. Firefighters scouted additional opportunities to control the fire and began preparing old Biscuit Fire dozer lines. Northwest of the fire, near Curry County Oak Flat, fire personnel continued to open up and prepare control lines previously constructed during...

Prospect, Oregon – Nineteen fires on the High Cascades Ranger District west of Crater Lake National Park are being managed under the collective name Sugar Pine, which is also the name of one specific fire. Approximately 4,016 acres have burned on all fires combined. The three largest fires are Sugar Pine, Goodview and Round Top. Weather conditions continue to be critical. Sustained high temperatures, gusty afternoon winds and low humidity are influencing fires. Yesterday the Sugar Pine Fire grew by nearly 700 acres to 2,379 acres and is 3% contained. The Goodview Fire grew by 250 acres to 1,353 acres and is 0% contained. Two days ago, the Jackson County Sheriff issued a Level 2 Evacuation “BE SET” notification for residents of the upper Elk Creek Road. Firefighters have been improving multiple firelines north of homes; setting up hoses and sprinklers; and moving flammable...

Inciweb Articles OR - July 29, 2018 - 9:40am
COMMUNITY MEETING WILL BE HELD IN HAPPY CAMP AT THE HAPPY CAMP GRANGE ON SUNDAY, JULY 29 AT 6:00 P.M. Weather & Fire Behavior: The weather will continue to be warm and dry across the fire area, with temperatures reaching 93 degrees along the ridges and 100 degrees in the valleys. These weather conditions will continue to contribute to extreme fire behavior, similar to what we’ve seen over the past few days. West-northwest winds are to increase again this afternoon, with gusts up to 15 mph which can cause extreme fire behavior, resulting in active surface spread, single and group tree torching with crown runs possible. Yesterday’s Activities: Crews were able to hold fire activity along the 060 road, limiting growth along the western side of the fire. Crews worked to contain the fire west of 18N30 road, south of Little Grayback Mountain. Overnight crews were able to continue with low intensity burning operations along the 4810 road across to the 012 road. The weather...

Garner Complex Morning Update for July 29 (Garner Complex Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - July 29, 2018 - 8:30am
Smoke from the Klondike Fire cast shade over the Taylor Creek Fire on Saturday, providing some relief from high temperatures and lowered the active fire behavior. The Klondike Fire is burning in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness about 9 miles southwest of the Taylor Creek Fire. Firefighters were able to hold and strengthen all Taylor Creek Fire lines, for the first time in several days. The weather trend will continue today, which means hot and dry conditions could stimulate the fire. However, smoke from the Klondike might provide some relief again today. Conditions remain difficult for firefighters because of steep topography coupled with the weather conditions. On the Grave Creek Fire, on the east side of the complex, structure protection and mop-up work continues. The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office continues to adjust evacuation orders. Mandatory evacuations ( Level 3—GO!) have expanded. More than 1,000 people are now subject to the evacuation orders. Information on evacuations...

Garner Complex Evening Update for July 28 (Garner Complex Wildfire)

Inciweb Articles OR - July 28, 2018 - 10:30pm
The combination of continued high temperatures, low humidities and dry fuels pro- duced active fire behavior across large portions of the Taylor Creek Fire today. Fire crews used a combination of aircraft, line construction and holding operations to keep the fire in check. Crews reinforced alternate containment lines on the eastern flank of the fire where it passed over primary lines. Improved air quality allowed fire managers to fly numerous helicopter missions dropping water to cool hot spots. This evening, structure suppression and wildland forces will be working together to construct and reinforce containment lines to halt the fire’s forward progress. Several task forces from the Oregon State Fire Marshalls office will be patrolling the fire’s perimeter, supporting the wildland crews operations, providing water sources, and protecting structures if needed. On the northern flank of the fire, crews will construct new dozer lines that will allow them to use the Rogue River...
