Southwest Type 2 Team Transitions with Northern Rockies Type 2 Team Summary: Southwest Area Incident Management Team #3 will begin transition with Northern Rockies Team 4. They will begin shadowing Team #3 in preparation of taking over command at 0600 on Thursday morning. Yesterday, fire behavior was active as temperatures were higher than normal with low humidity and steady winds. On the southern perimeter of the fire, it continued to grow and run up Hardy Ridge in rough terrain and producing spot fires nearby. Air operations engaged the western and southwestern perimeters with over 20 hours of combined flight time and dropping over 60,000 gallons of water, the highest since operations have started. Overnight, smoke moved to the northwest and southeast of the fire area. It settled in the valleys and is anticipated to clear by midday. Acreage: 41,430 Containment: 45 percent Personnel: 458 Red Flag Warning In Effect Pacific Northwest Team 3 Transfers Command to Northwest Team 10 Cougar Creek Fire: A Red Flag Warning will be in effect today across the fire area due to a combination of increasing temperatures and wind. This marks a change in the weather pattern for firefighters following several days of cool and moist conditions. Crews proceeded with mop up, working through the ash to locate and extinguish hot spots. Smoldering branches and logs were moved into the interior. On the eastern and southern flanks of the fire, firefighters cold-trailed the line. In this process, firefighters will search for concealed heat sources, sometimes removing one glove and holding their hand over the ash to feel for heat. Fires Strong West/Northwest winds resulting from the passage of a cold front will affect fires this afternoon and are predicted to result in fire growth. Humidities will rise in the evening and overnight to dampen and reduce fire activity again. The Crescent Mtn. fire grew 542 acres in the last 24 hours, McLeod grew 256 acres, and Cougar Creek grew 52 acres. Smoke Smoke in the morning will concentrate near active fires. Strong winds developing this afternoon will move smoke to the east which should clean up air quality near fires but smoke will spread over the Northern parts of the Columbia Basin. Long-Range Stable weather conditions return tomorrow after the wind event passes today. Areas near fires will continue to be impacted by smoke at times especially Winthrop, Twisp, and Plain although as fires are increasingly contained and controlled, smoke impacts should continue to slowly decrease.

Orient, WA – The Northeast Washington Interagency Incident Management type three Team #3 took command of the Horns Mountain Fire at 6am today, August 29. This type three team will take the incident through mop up and secure the fire to the point where the management of the fire can be turned back to the local agency. The Horns Mountain Fire is burning at the Canadian border to the east of the Laurier Port of Entry border crossing. To date, 5,583 acres have burned, and the fire is 90% contained. Yesterday’s activities: Some crews, engines and heavy equipment were demobilized, resulting in a smaller operation on the fire line. Crews working on the Watson Creek Fire connected fire lines yesterday around the entire perimeter of the fire and are strengthening the lines to achieve full containment as soon as possible. There will be continued work in and around the fire holding the lines, mopping up and patrolling. Weather today in the fire area is predicted to be warmer and drier with light easterly winds. Fire behavior along most of the perimeter will be creeping and smoldering. Active fire behavior could occur in the interior areas of unburned fuels and the western flank of the fire could be affected by the easterly winds. Today the public is invited to tour the fire camp in Paisley any time between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. On Wednesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. there will be tours of the Heli-base at the Paisley airport. Relative humidity rose to about 40%. This morning these winds should calm by 11 a.m., returning to typical patterns (upslope in the morning; from the North in the afternoon, 3-6 mph). A hot air mass will persist with temperatures exceeding 90 degrees and relative humidity of approximately 20%. These conditions create a potential for more active fire behavior. Fires Warmer, dryer weather today means fires will burn more actively. Firefighters will also utilize back-burning to cut off fire movement. The Crescent Mt. fire remains particularly active on its SE corner above Twisp and Carlton and firefighters are working especially hard in that area. Crescent Mt. grew 158 acres yesterday. The McLeod fire is also active on its SE corner above Mazama, it grew 74 acres. Cougar Creek is active on its SW corner above Plain, it reported 0 growth yesterday. Smoke Fires in the area are no longer spreading rapidly so much less smoke is being emitted. Somewhat increased fire activity and smoke is expected over the next few days as temperatures warm and firefighters utilize back burning for fire control. Areas near fires will see unhealthy conditions at times and the general area will see increased background smoke.
