Chikamin Fire Update August 9, 2020 (Chikamin Wildfire)

InciWeb Articles WA - August 9, 2020 - 8:05am
The Chikamin Fire saw negligible growth yesterday and is still currently at 347 acres. The current containment is now at 50 percent. Crews will continue to take advantage of the cooler air and higher relative humidity (RH) to improve and extend containment lines and continue to work on contingency lines as well.  Firefighters completed the handline on the east side of the fire from the FS 6210 road to the north. The Entiat Hotshots will continue working on constructing handline up to the Wolverine scar on the north side of the Chikamin Fire today. On the west side of the fire, crews have constructed the necessary handlines and have a hose lay with sprinklers in place. Containment lines will be patrolled in the coming days by crews, aircraft and UAS (unmanned aircraft systems) to make sure it is secure. As a reminder on the Wenatchee River Ranger District Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect. This means that campfires are only allowed in designated campgrounds and Wilderness...

Chikamin Fire Update August 8, 2020 (Chikamin Wildfire)

InciWeb Articles WA - August 8, 2020 - 8:20am
The Chikamin Fire saw minimal growth yesterday and is now at 347 acres. The current containment is at 30 percent. The cooler temperatures and moderate relative humidity values that were left behind by the passing cold front on Thursday have greatly assisted firefighting efforts. Good progress is being made by firefighters as most containment lines are being constructed along existing roads, trail systems and by utilizing natural barriers. The operations team is focusing its suppression strategy on constructing containment, contingency and direct line where possible to stop the spread of the fire. Yesterday, smokejumpers and the Entiat hotshots finished lining the east perimeter of the fire. Crews will continue to secure and patrol these lines in the coming days. Helicopters will continue to assist dropping water and providing reconnaissance while UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) will also be used to monitor the perimeter of the fire. Helicopters have dropped over 200,000 gallons of...

Chikamin Fire Update August 7, 2020 (Chikamin Wildfire)

InciWeb Articles WA - August 7, 2020 - 8:25am
Based on infrared data collected overnight the fire is estimated at 340 acres. Yesterday the Entiat Hotshots contained work on east flank of the fire to tie in containment lines with smokejumpers in the northeast corner. These lines are anticipated to be finished by end of shift and smokejumpers will hike out. The Entiat Hotshots will remain spiked out and continue constructing line to the north up to the Entiat ridge. On the west flank of the fire crews continued falling hazard trees and brushing a spur road off the FS 6210 road, with the help of heavy machinery. The use of UAS (unmanned aircraft systems) continues to be advantageous in assessing the viability of safe line construction and work by crews on the west flank. Three helicopters will be dropping water on the west region of the fire again to restrict the fire’s progression and cool the fire down, allowing for crews to more safely work in this area. The lower temperatures and moderate relative humidity have been...

Chikamin Fire Update August 6, 2020 (Chikamin Wildfire)

InciWeb Articles WA - August 6, 2020 - 8:04am
Based on a reconnaissance flight last night the fire is now estimated at 327 acres.Due to increased fire activity yesterday, crews on the east flank were unable to work on containment lines. Smokejumpers worked on the northern tip of the fire and scouted the Entiat side of the fire. There was increased heat on the east side, but that has mostly cooled down and the fire is now slowly backing down the east slope. Crews will attempt to confront the east flank again today to tie into the smokejumper’s containment lines on the northeast corner. Yesterday, crews and heavy machinery worked on improving lines on the FS 6210 road. Today on the southwest region of the fire, crews will be felling hazardous trees in the work area while dozers work to build a confinement line along a spur on the FS 6210 road.  There will be three helicopters working in conjunction with crews on southwest side of the fire today. Helicopters will be providing air support and dropping water on this section of...

Chikamin Fire Update August 5, 2020 (Chikamin Wildfire)

InciWeb Articles WA - August 5, 2020 - 8:20am
Yesterday, crews covered significant ground on the east flank of the fire and will be continuing work on the east side to tie in containment lines with 16 smokejumpers working in the northeast corner. Crews were successful in finishing brush and snag work along the 6210 road. The north side of the fire is burning into the old (2015) Wolverine fire scar, and fire activity is diminishing there.Increased torching and fire activity was observed yesterday on the west flank. Three crews and helicopters dropping water worked on confining this side of the fire. Today, crews will continue to work as far as safely possible and will scout out further options for confinement along the west flank. Today, fire weather is predicted to be slightly elevated compared to yesterday’s observed weather, with slightly higher temperatures and lower relative humidity. Tomorrow’s forecast is predicted to bring a cold front with gusty winds and a chance of showers. Crews will be monitoring weather and fire...

Chikamin Fire Update August 4, 2020 (Chikamin Wildfire)

InciWeb Articles WA - August 4, 2020 - 8:00am
There are now approximately 143 personnel currently assigned to the Chikamin Fire, which is estimated at 260 acres.  On Monday, firefighters, along with a heavy equipment, utilized the cooler temperatures and minimal fire behavior to their advantage and continued brush and prep work along FS Road 6210. As work along the 6210 road finishes up, crews will be moving both to the east and west of the fire to start containment on these sides. Smokejumpers continue to work on the northeast perimeter of the fire. Helicopters dropped buckets of water on the Southwest flank to keep the fire from crossing the 6210 road. The use of UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) has also been beneficial in the steep terrain of the Chikamin Fire to capture aerial infrared images to find hotspots and watch the perimeter of the fire, limiting the risk and exposure of fire personnel on the line.An engine patrolled the 6210 road overnight making sure the fire did not spot to the other side of the road.Crews will...

Over 7 New Trail Miles in Raging River State Forest

WA DNR News - July 31, 2020 - 2:55pm

Opening Saturday, August 1st, 7 new miles of trail will be added to the Raging River State Forest system. This will expand the system to over 24 total trail miles.

The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR), in collaboration with Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance and a team of their professional trail builders, community volunteers, state and Washington Conservation Corps crews, will open 7.2 new trail miles on August 1. This increases the Raging River State Forest trail system to over 24 miles of world-class mountain biking trails.

Combined with DNR’s nearby East Tiger Mountain Bike Trails, the Raging River trail system puts nearly 50 miles of mountain biking trails next door to Issaquah, Snoqualmie, and North Bend communities within a 25 mile drive for most Puget Sound metro area residents. Over several years, trail system expansions have rapidly positioned the corridor to become one of the best riding options in the Puget Sound region. Pending additional funding and coordination, DNR plans to connect the Raging River and East Tiger trail systems, with additional opportunities to connect, via trail, straight from downtown North Bend.

In 2009, DNR acquired 7,000 acres of forestland just to the south of Rattlesnake Mountain, which would become a core part of the new Raging River State Forest. King County provided critical funding through the Conservation Futures Program and holds a conservation easement on 4,000 acres. The Raging River State Forest trail system is part of DNR’s successful implementation of its Snoqualmie Corridor Recreation Plan, which guides recreation development across 53,500 acres of working forest and conservation lands.

With over 1 million estimated visitors every year, DNR-managed landscapes within the Snoqualmie Corridor include Raging River and Tiger Mountain state working forests as well as Rattlesnake Mountain Scenic Area, Middle Fork Snoqualmie, Mount Si and West Tiger Mountain conservation areas.

“With over 7 miles of new trails opening in Raging River, we are moving one step closer towards completion of a mountain bike trail system primarily in the northern zone of the forest, which was identified as a phase one implementation priority in the Snoqualmie Corridor Recreation Plan,” says Sam Jarrett, DNR Trails Program Manager.

“We are excited to continue this momentum and have secured grant funding for 13 additional trail miles, currently in the planning and permitting process, which will create important connections in the mountain biking zone and begin to develop trails more compatible with equestrian and hiking access in the southern area of the forest.”

This project is funded from a DNR grant awarded from the Washington Wildlife & Recreation Program administered through the Recreation and Conservation Office.

The new trails will offer several new loop options, providing opportunities for riding skill progression, and disperse use in the popular trail system, particularly reducing two-way traffic on the Raging Ridge Trail, part of the original Phase 1 of the 17-mile trail system that opened in 2018. New trail loop options should disperse visitors and reduce the number of potential trail interactions with other users within the system. This is particularly important to minimize exposure to COVID-19.

“The significance of this weekend’s opening in a time of unprecedented trail use during COVID cannot be understated. Expanding the Raging River trail network offers easy to access trails that further disperse riders from the busy ridge trail, when the need for recreation infrastructure is at an all-time high,” says Yvonne Kraus, Executive Director for Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance.

“The Raging River trail network now caters to a variety of rider skill and fitness levels. It’s another major milestone and success for this well-planned and supported trail network just outside Seattle. We are so pleased and grateful for the continued investment from RCO and DNR in providing a world-class mountain bike venue in our state.”

DNR Recreation and Leadership

Led by the Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz, DNR manages 1,200 miles of trails and 160-plus recreation sites in 3 million acres of working forest state trust lands and 92 natural areas. DNR trust lands keep forests development-free, provide clean water, and generate revenue for public services and school construction. In her role, the Commissioner also oversees 2.6 million acres of state aquatic lands, rule administration for 12 million forested acres, the Washington Geological Survey and wildland firefighting across 13 million acres of forestland.
