Two Four Two Fire Update – Tuesday Afternoon (Sept. 8. 2020) (Two Four Two Wildfire)
CHILOQUIN, OR – The Two Four Two Fire is continuing to burn on the Chiloquin Ranger District and the surrounding area. The fire is estimated to be approximately 6,000 acres with no containment. The cause is under investigation. The Two Four Two Fire is burning in dried grass, brush and timber. It’s growth yesterday was wind-driven, and similar conditions are expected today due to a Red Flag Warning in effect until midnight for strong gusty winds and low relative humidity. Today the fire continues to move in all directions. Multiple structures are threatened. Fire managers are still assessing structures that may have been lost. U.S. Highway 97 remains closed between Oregon State Highway 62 south of Chiloquin north to the intersection with Forest Road 9732 at Oux Kanee Overlook. Evening Update 9-8-20 (Cold Springs Wildfire)
Omak, WA – Firefighting efforts today focused on structure protection and working on containment lines. Just before noon a structure fire was reported at the Old Mill in Omak. Crews from the Cold Springs Fire responded to assist the local jurisdictions when the fire ignited spot fires to the east. Air resources supported the firefighting efforts on the ground and helped keep the fires from spreading further. Additional crews have arrived for night operations and look to make additional progress overnight. There are approximately 200 firefighters engaged in firefighting operations. Closure Update Evans Canyon Fire 9/8/2020 (Evans Canyon Wildfire)
All areas previously closed will be opening tomorrow with the exception of the Umtanum Foot Bridge and recreation areas beyond. These areas include Highway 821 (Yakima Canyon Hwy), the Yakima River, boat ramps, and Yakima River Canyon campgrounds, BBQ Flats and Wenas recreation areas along with parts of North Wenas Road, Sheep Company Road, Naches Wenas Road, and Longmire Road will be open. Umtanum Foot Bridge to remain closed. Pacific Northwest Team 12 will be holding its final virtual community meeting on the Evans Canyon Fire hosted via Facebook Live on the Yakima Valley Office of Emergency Management Facebook page at 5 PM tomorrow, September 9th.

Jefferson and Mason Counties, Washington, September 8, 2020 - Due to extreme fire danger and concern for public safety, Olympic National Forest is implementing a fire closure of the Lena Lake trail system (Trails # 810, 811, and 821) due to its proximity to the Mt. Lena Fire. The closure prohibits public access to trails that lead to both Upper and Lower Lena lakes, as well as the southern portion of The Brothers Wilderness. All visitor use past the Lena Lake trailhead at the junction of Forest Road 25 is prohibited. The trail and area closure will be in place until the fire no longer poses a threat to the area. The Mt. Yesterday’s strong winds brought smoke into the area from new fires in Washington. With continued strong northeastern winds today, smoke from Washington will continue to move into the Columbia River Gorge and throughout the fire area today. Evans Canyon Fire Update September 8 (Evans Canyon Wildfire)
The Evans Canyon Fire is located approximately 8 miles north of Naches, Washington. Yesterday’s wind event moved smoke from other fires across Central Washington into the Evans Canyon Fire area. Temperatures are cooler today, in the mid-70s in the valleys with east winds 10-14 mph gusting to 20 mph. Yesterday’s Operations: The predicted strong winds appeared yesterday afternoon, and control lines were tested and held. There was no increase in the size of the fire as a result of Monday’s historic wind event. Several new fires started across Central Washington yesterday, and some fire crews and resources were reassigned to these new fires. Firefighters from the Evans Canyon Fire also assisted with two new local fire starts. Today’s Operations: Northwest Team 12 will continue to demobilize resources to support other fires across the region and plans to transfer management of the Evans Canyon Fire back to the local unit of the Washington DNR within the next 48 hours. The fire is currently estimated at 140,000 acres with 0% containment at this time Firefighters from Mt. Tolman Fire Center, Okanogan County Fire Districts 3, 6, 8, 15, Washington State Department of Natural Resources and numerous federal, state and local agencies continue to assist with fire suppression. Two Four Two Fire currently burning on Chiloquin Ranger District (Two Four Two Wildfire)
CHILOQUIN, OR – The Two Four Two Fire was discovered this evening north of Collier Springs on the Fremont-Winema National Forest Chiloquin Ranger District. The fire is wind-driven, with short range spotting to the south and growing rapidly this evening. The fire is now burning on both sides of U.S. Highway 97 with extreme fire behavior. The fire has moved nearly 3 miles from its initial reported location near Williamson River Campground, moving to the south-southwest. It is currently estimated to be more than 1,000 acres with no containment. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Currently there are 20 engines, 2 handcrews and 5 dozers assigned to the fire. Additional resources have been ordered. U.S. Highway 97 is currently closed between the intersection with State Highway 422 North and South Chiloquin Road, north to Forest Road 9732 at Oux Kanee Overlook.
