Boyds Fire Update - August 23, 2018 (Boyds Fire Wildfire)
Kettle Falls, WA - The Boyds Fire is located 3 miles west of Kettle Falls, WA. The footprint of the fire is 3,488 acres and is 54 percent contained. Planned burnouts, within the fires containment line, will increase acres burned. The fire continues to burn in a mixture of timber litter, slash, brush and grass. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Yesterday, crews worked to burnout excessive fuels and vegetation along the western side of the fire, inside the containment line. Due to interior active fire behavior, fire officials chose to continue burnout operations throughout the night in an attempt to, “reduce fuels and protect the line on our terms rather than during the daytime when conditions were less favorable” said Tony Gilmer, Strategic Operations Section Chief. Fire officials chose to continue burnout operations overnight while conditions remained favorable. Work was slow but steady burning small sections and then controlling the burn area. Crews monitored the...

Helicopters were able to drop over 280,000 gallons of water once the smoke lifted. When conditions allow, crews will continue the low intensity burnout operations along the western edge of the fire. Along the southern and eastern sides of the fire, crews continue to mop-up and monitor the fire-line. Crews will continue to assess structures in...

August 22, 2018 - Cougar Creek Fire Burning Operations Update (Cougar Creek Wildfire)
Improved visibility continued today, allowing aerial resources to be utilized in support of burning operations to reinforce containment lines on the western edge of the fire. Aerial ignition is being used in conjunction with crews hand firing on the ground to continue burning out vegetation between containment lines and the fire. The aerial ignitions are accomplished with a low-flying helicopter equipped with plastic sphere dispenser (PSD) or “ping pong ball” technology. PSD allows fire to be introduced into areas that are too steep or exposed for firefighters on the ground to access. The balls are filled with potassium permanganate and then injected with glycol and dropped in strategic locations. Once on the ground, a chemical reaction within the balls creates fire, causing vegetation on the ground to ignite under the right
August 22, 2018 Cougar Creek Fire Operational Update (Cougar Creek Wildfire)
August 22, 2018 Cougar Creek Fire Operational Update - Crews are using fire in a strategic manner to consume dead and down vegetation between the fire’s edge and containment line. This strengthens containment lines by creating a buffer between the active fire and improved lines. It also provides opportunities for firefighters to safely engage from locations where containment efforts are more likely to be successful. Today’s operations may include both hand ignition and the use of a helicopter mounted plastic sphere dispenser.

Air Quality - August 22, 2018 (Cougar Creek Wildfire)
Fires A predicted wind shift from easterly to westerly today has firefighters alert for fire spread into new areas. Humidity will be low and fires are expected to be active. Today (Wednesday) should be the last day with hot, dry conditions contributing to fire spread this week as cooler weather is on its way. Smoke Easterly winds provided some improvements in air quality yesterday but today winds shift to west/northwest moving smoke from fires in the Cascades and Canada into the Columbia Basin worsening air quality later today and overnight especially in the northern parts of the forecast area. Long Range A significant cooling trend is forecast for late in the week along with scattered rain showers in the North Columbia Basin near the Canadian border. Fires will quiet down and air quality is expected to improve for the weekend.
