Air Quality - August 31, 2018 (Cougar Creek Fire Wildfire)

August 31, 2018 - 11:49am
Fires Gusty winds and low humidities are contributing to active fire behavior, especially on the Crescent Mt. fire near Twisp (Crescent grew 734 acres yesterday), and the Cougar Creek fire near Plain (Cougar Creek fire grew 274 acres). The McLeod fire, north of Winthrop was fairly quiet yesterday and reports 0 growth. Fire size totals: Crescent: 44,450, McLeod: 22,511, and Cougar: 41,704. Smoke Fire and dispersion conditions today will be similar to yesterday. Fires are active and producing smoke but breezy conditions will prevent smoke from accumulating. Winds will move smoke predominately to the East/Southeast. Long-Range Air quality has improved considerably from recent conditions and is expected to continue to be reasonably good overall. Smoke is still in the area though and fires are still active so under more stable atmospheric conditions, degraded air quality could return especially to areas in close proximity to fires.

Thursday and Friday, firefighters continue to conduct burn-out operations at portions of the western part of the fire as conditions allow. Although this tactic does produce additional smoke, it is crucial to secure the fire line. The most active area of the fire is at its northern edge. In this area, crews continue to recon and construct containment lines fire between Signal Peak and Cougar Meadow. This effort is intended to halt the northern progression of...

Air Quality - August 30, 2018 (Cougar Creek Fire Wildfire)

August 30, 2018 - 10:42am
Fires Strong winds yesterday evening affected all large fires in the forecast area and active burning was observed. The Cougar Creek fire between Plain and Entiat grew about 159 acres during the wind event producing a plume that dropped down into Chelan and caused a period of unhealthy air in the evening. In the Methow Valley area, the Crescent Mt. fire grew about 232 acres and McLeod grew about 596 acres. Smoke Extra fire activity caused by yesterdays winds will result in some increases in the amount of smoke today although winds remain brisk enough to prevent much smoke pooling. Overall winds will be from the North/Northwest moving smoke to the South/Southeast. Long-Range Air quality is expected to degrade somewhat tomorrow as winds decrease and smoke accumulates in areas near fires. Smoke will remain a factor in areas near fires but will continue to slowly decrease as fires are brought under control.
