This morning, winds will be especially prevalent over ridges, but are expected to lessen this afternoon as the front moves east. Rain is also expected this morning, diminishing to showers this afternoon. On Friday, NW IMT 9 will be turning over management of the Miller Complex fires to a Type 3 command structure, signaling a reduction in the incident’s complexity. The Type 3 team will patrol established containment lines, rehabilitate those lines as needed, and monitor areas of the fire where natural features provide containment. Umpqua North Complex UpdateSeptember 20, 2017 – 9:00 a.m. Fire Information: 541-378-6944 (8:00 am to 8:00 pm) Start Date: August 11, 2017 Cause: Lightning Fuels: Timber, forest litter, tall grass, shrubs Acres: 43,139 Percent Contained: 38% The fire area received 1.6 to 2.6 inches of precipitation over the last 48 hours which reduced fire behavior to minimal surface creeping and backing fire activity. The second, stronger cold front moved in last night bringing with it increased rain showers, high winds and a chance for one to two inches of snow at elevations as low as 4,500 feet. A flash flood watch remains in effect through this afternoon along portions of Highway 138 impacted by the fire. Rain showers are expected to dissipate Thursday, and by Friday the area will begin to dry out and experience warmer temperatures. Kelsey Fire Area Closure (Kelsey Fire Wildfire)
Firefighting efforts to date have held the Kelsey Fire to just over 500 acres. The extended rain in the forecast will help suppression objectives, but is unlikely to be enough to put the fire out. For firefighter and public safety, an area closure is now in place. The area will cover north of the railroad line near Highway 58 to Forest Service road 24 (these roads are not included in the closure.) All Evacuation Levels Dropped for Umpqua North Fires - 09/19/17 Effective Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at noon, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Fire Managers will lift all evacuations related to the Umpqua North Fires. Residents living in the Dry Creek/Illahee area (Hwy 138 E, milepost 46.5 to 49.5), Slide Creek area (Hwy 138 E, milepost 53 to 56), Toketee Village (Hwy 138 E, milepost 56 to 58.5) and Toketee Ranger Station (Hwy 138 E, milepost 58.5 to 61) were previously under a Level 1 or "Be Ready" Evacuation notice. The lifting of this notice means no homes are currently being threatened by any of the fires in the Umpqua North Complex. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office and our firefighting partners ask that all residents have an emergency plan and live in a state of preparedness for when disasters may strike. Umpqua National Forest Moves to Industrial Fire Precaution Level I Public Use Restrictions on Campfires Lifted ROSEBURG, OR – September 18, 2017 – Effective Tuesday, September 19, at 12:01 a.m., the Umpqua National Forest will drop into an Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) I. There are no time restrictions under an IFPL I. Fire danger rating for the Umpqua National Forest is now at “moderate”. Forest officials also announced an end to public use restrictions for the following items:· Campfires outside of campgrounds· Smoking outside of a vehicle· Operating internal combustion engines· Welding or operating an acetylene or other torch with open flame As hunting season is underway, the public is reminded that fire season is not over. Level 1 Evacuation for Breitenbush Hot Springs area (Whitewater Fire Wildfire)
On Tues. Sept 19, in cooperation with fire officials, the Marion County Sheriff's Office and Marion County Emergency Management, the decision was made to move the Breitenbush Hot Springs and the Breitenbush summer homes to a level 1 or a ready evacuation state. Recent rainfall has reduced the fire danger, however residents should be cautious when returning home. The continued forecast has called for additional rains and the potential for mudslides in the area. The Breitenbush area will remain in a level 1 or ready state until the fire danger is no longer of concern which will most likely be sometime this fall or winter. High Cascades Complex East Zone Update, September 19 (High Cascades Complex Wildfire)
Summary: All three fires received wetting rains Monday night. Although some heat remains in dead and down surface fuels and litter, rains, cooler temperatures and high humidity greatly assisted firefighting efforts. As fire progression slows, crews will develop plans to rehabilitate hand and dozer lines used in suppression operations. The Incident Command Post was busy today constructing large tents with heaters to provide returning crews a warm place to dry out after a long day on the fire line. Inclement weather impeded aerial observations so no new acreage is available. Spruce Lake Fire: (15,826 acres and 22% contained) Little fire growth is expected but active monitoring will continue. Blanket Creek Fire: (33,322 acres and 28% contained) Crews conducted a minor backfire operation to button up a hot spot near constructed line along the southwest edge. High Cascades Complex West Zone 9/19/2017 9:00 a.m. Fire Information: (541) 316-8352 Fire behavior has been temporarily reduced to smoldering and creeping by the rain that started Sunday night and has continued through Tuesday morning. According to Incident Meteorologist trainee Derek Williams, the Broken Lookout Fire and the community of Union Creek have received .75 inches of rain to date, and about an inch of rain has fallen on the Pup Fire since the rain began Sunday night. Relative humidity of 100% occurred at all locations near the fires on Monday in addition to low, dense cloud cover. A stronger storm pulse is expected tonight, with rainfall totals perhaps doubling, and west winds reaching 30 mph with higher gusts. Snow has fallen at the higher elevations, and accumulations may approach 6-10 inches in the Crater Lake area before melting through the weekend.
