Middle Fork Complex Update for Monday, August 30th (Middle Fork Complex Wildfire)
WESTFIR, Ore. – Lingering smoke moderated fire activity until midafternoon Sunday, when coastal breezes cleared the air, which in turn increased fire activity. On the Gales Fire, crews are reinforcing control lines, and strategically positioning resources in areas of the fire with increased fire activity, with assistance from helicopters providing water drops to cool the edge of the fire. An Air Attack plane provided eyes in the sky for firefighters on the ground, alerting them to changing conditions and movement of the fire. Despite a Red Flag Warning and critical fire weather predicted for the weekend, firefighters were able to limit the spread on the Gales Fire to less than a thousand acres. The Kwis Fire footprint has held at 1,485 acres for more than a week. Firefighters are using infrared mapping to identify and extinguish hot spots within the fire footprint and removing flammable material from the edges of the fire to further reduce the...

Smoke Outlook for Monday, August 30 (Middle Fork Complex Wildfire)
Fire and WeatherThe Middle Fork Complex is now at 18,935 acres and is 12% contained. The Fire Weather Forecast expects cooler temperatures and higher humidity today as another coastal push brings ocean-modified air inland. A strong/shallow inversion this morning is expected to lift by noon. Wind will be light, primarily out of the west. These winds will complement upslope/upcanyon winds through the day. By afternoon smoke and cloud cover should decease. The Fire Behavior Analyst expects fire to exhibit creeping and smoldering in large fuels and flare-ups where fuels have been preheating. There is potential for isolated torching. Decreasing cloud and smoke cover will allow fire activity to increase.SmokeTerrain driven winds coupled with light westerly transport winds will slowly, likely at a snail’s pace, move smoke easterly toward and over the Cascades today. It will take a while for smoke to respond to upslope air movement, and air quality will likely degrade as smoke backtracks...
