Soil Burn Severity Mapping Completed (Cub Creek 2 BAER Burned Area Emergency Response)

InciWeb Articles WA - September 8, 2021 - 9:39am
Winthrop, Washington—Burned Area Emergency Response (BAER) specialists recently completed data gathering and analysis for the area burned in the Cub Creek 2 and Cedar Creek Fires to produce soil burn severity maps for each fire. Developing a postfire soil burn severity map is an important first step in the rapid assessment process. It enables BAER teams to prioritize field reviews and identify areas that may pose a risk to critical values within or downstream of the burned area. The map displays soil burn severity in four categories: areas of very low or unburned, low, moderate, or high. The Cub Creek 2 Fire burned a total of 70,818 acres: 18% very low or unburned, 41% low, 26% moderate, and 15% high. The Cedar Creek Fire burned a total of 55,248 acres. 11% very low or unburned, 41% low, 33% moderate, and 15% high.  Soil Burn SeverityVery Low or Unburned – This category of soil burn severity indicates little to no observable change to the vegetation condition, particularly from...

Smoke All of the outlook area is starting the day with smoke and poor air quality. Bend, La Pine, McKenzie Bridge should start to see some modest improvement as westerly winds start to move the smoke around this afternoon, before it settles back down this evening. Devil’s Knob Complex Update Wednesday, September 8, 2021 – 9:00 a.m. Rocky Mountain Type 1 Incident Management Team Dan Dallas, Incident Commander   Information phone: 541-900-6133 Email:2021.DevilsKnob@firenet.gov  Information staffing hours: 8:00 am – 8:00 pm   Current Situation: Fire managers were prepared for a busy day yesterday due to hot conditions and low humidity, preceding the arrival of a low pressure system, coupled with uncertainties about additional smoke from California. The smoke covering did not arrive, which resulted in large smoke columns, spot fires across several firelines on the north and east sides, and approximately 2 miles of growth on the northeastern side of the Smith Fire. This required a defensive approach to firefighting actions with a focus on containing spot fires. In the evening, several hours of increased winds with gusts up to 25 mpg contributed to sustained active fire behavior into the night. Some crews’ shifts were...
