Air Quality Alert issued August 2 at 12:04PM PDT by NWS Medford OR

NOAA Current Watches-OR - August 2, 2024 - 12:04pm
Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has issued an Air Pollution Advisory...in effect until 11 AM PDT Monday. The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issued an air quality advisory for Eastern Douglas, Klamath and Lake counties due to numerous wildfires burning in the region. DEQ also expects intermittent smoke in Jackson County through at least Monday due to smoke from surrounding fires. The wildfire smoke combined with forecast conditions will cause air quality levels to fluctuate and could be at unhealthy levels. Smoke levels can change rapidly depending on the weather and planned burn operations. Smoke can irritate the eyes and lungs and worsen some medical conditions. People most at risk include infants and young children, people with heart or lung disease, older adults and pregnant people. People can take the following precautions to protect their health: - Follow local burn restrictions to prevent deteriorating air quality. - Avoid strenuous outdoor activity during periods of poor air quality. - People with heart or lung problems and young children are especially vulnerable. These people should stay indoors while smoke levels are high. - Use certified High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters in indoor heating, ventilation, cooling and air purification systems. - Avoid using wood-burning stoves and other sources of indoor smoke if possible. Red Flag Warning issued August 2 at 11:35AM PDT until August 3 at 11:00PM PDT by NWS Medford OR

NOAA Current Watches-OR - August 2, 2024 - 11:35am
A deep layer monsoonal moisture will push into the region this afternoon and evening. This will be followed by a potent shortwave expected to pass through the area late tonight through Saturday afternoon. This is likely to result in isolated thunderstorms beginning late this afternoon, with isolated thunderstorms a possibility tonight into Saturday morning. Another round of thunderstorms is anticipated Saturday afternoon, with moderate confidence in scattered coverage along and east of the Cascades. The National Weather Service in Medford has upgraded the Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Warning which is in effect from 11 AM to 11 PM PDT Saturday. * IMPACTS..Abundant lightning on dry fuels will increase the risk of new fire starts. Additionally, gusty outflow winds will allow for new and existing fires to grow rapidly. * AFFECTED AREA...Most areas from the Cascade crest east, including FWZs 623, 624, 625, 284, 285. And west of the Cascade crest, FWZs 617 and 280. * THUNDERSTORMS...Isolated to scattered thunderstorms, with the greatest coverage anticipated Saturday afternoon. Storms will initially start off dry late this afternoon/evening, then trend wetter early Saturday and Saturday afternoon. Despite the wet nature of the thunderstorms, lightning strikes outside of precipitation cores are possible and cause for concern. * OUTFLOW WINDS...Gusts up to 40 to 50 mph. These outflow winds can travel up to 50 miles away from the thunderstorm that caused it. * DETAILED URL...View the hazard area in detail at https://www.wrh.noaa.gov/map/?wfo=mfr Red Flag Warning 2024-08-02T11:35:00-07:00 2024-08-02T11:35:00-07:00 2024-08-03T11:00:00-07:00 2024-08-03T05:00:00-07:00 Actual Alert Met Expected Severe Likely Western Klamath National Forest; Siskiyou County from the Cascade Mountains East and South to Mt Shasta; Modoc County Except for the Surprise Valley; Umpqua National Forest; Southern Oregon Cascades; Klamath Basin and the Fremont-Winema National Forest; South Central Oregon Desert including the BLM Land in Eastern Lake and Western Harney Counties SAME 006093 SAME 006049 SAME 041019 SAME 041029 SAME 041035 SAME 041039 SAME 041037 SAME 041025 UGC CAZ280 UGC CAZ284 UGC CAZ285 UGC ORZ617 UGC ORZ623 UGC ORZ624 UGC ORZ625 AWIPSidentifier RFWMFR WMOidentifier WWUS86 KMFR 021835 NWSheadline RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 11 PM PDT SATURDAY FOR ABUNDANT LIGHTNING ON DRY FUELS BLOCKCHANNEL EAS BLOCKCHANNEL NWEM BLOCKCHANNEL CMAS VTEC /O.NEW.KMFR.FW.W.0018.240803T1800Z-240804T0600Z/ eventEndingTime 2024-08-04T06:00:00+00:00
